Are Beyond & Impossible Burgers Healthy

by | Feb 25, 2025 | Plant-Based Nutrition, Processed Foods & Health, Vegan Lifestyle

The Truth About Plant-Based Burgers: Are They Really Healthy? 🌱🍔

Introduction: A Better Choice, But Not a Healthy One

Plant-based burgers like the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat have become mainstream alternatives to beef, marketed as a healthier and more sustainable choice. But let’s be honest—just because something is “better” than a beef burger doesn’t mean it’s actually good for you. 🤷‍♂️

As someone who follows a whole-food, plant-based, salt-, oil-, and sugar-free (WFPB SOS-free) diet, I generally avoid these burgers because they are still processed and contain added salt, oil, and questionable ingredients. However, I do believe they have a place—on cheat days and special occasions. Let’s break down the reality of these plant-based patties and where they fit into a truly healthy lifestyle.

How Do Beyond Meat & Impossible Burgers Compare to Beef? 🧐

Dr. Michael Greger from NutritionFacts.org has analyzed the health impacts of plant-based burgers compared to beef. Here’s the breakdown:

No cholesterol or trans fats (Unlike beef, which is loaded with artery-clogging cholesterol and saturated fat)
Less risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (Since it eliminates processed meat carcinogens)
Better for the planet (Uses fewer resources, emits less greenhouse gas)

Still contains saturated fats (From added coconut oil)
Highly processed (Far from whole foods like beans, lentils, or mushrooms)
High sodium (Much more than a homemade bean burger)

So, while these are better than beef, that’s not saying much—it’s like comparing a diet soda to a regular soda. One might be “less bad,” but neither is actually good for you. 🚫🥤

Why I Don’t Eat These Regularly 🚫🍔

On a day-to-day basis, I stick to a whole-food, plant-based diet without added salt, oil, or sugar. Here’s why I personally don’t include Beyond or Impossible Burgers in my regular meals:

1️⃣ They Contain Salt & Oil – Processed food is still processed food. I don’t consume added sodium or processed oils because they contribute to inflammation and disease. 🛑
2️⃣ They Are Not Nutritionally Dense – Unlike whole plant foods, these burgers lack fiber-rich, nutrient-packed ingredients that promote long-term health.
3️⃣ They Are Engineered for Taste, Not Health – These companies focus on making it taste like meat rather than maximizing nutrition.

But does that mean I never eat them? No. I’ll have one on a cheat day.

When I’d Eat a Plant-Based Burger (And Why You Might, Too!) 🍔🔥

I’m not a robot. I go to barbecues, family gatherings, and social events. And sometimes, I want to eat something that makes me feel like everyone else at the cookout without harming animals or my long-term health.

On those rare occasions, I’ll grab a Beyond or Impossible Burger, throw it on the grill, and enjoy it—but I do so knowing it’s a treat, not a health food. It’s like having a vegan pizza or a slice of cake. It won’t kill you in one sitting, but it’s not part of a truly health-promoting diet. 🍕🍰

So if you’re transitioning to a plant-based diet and struggling with cravings, these can be a useful stepping stone, but they shouldn’t be a regular part of your meals. Whole, unprocessed foods are always the gold standard.

The Healthiest Burger Alternative? 🥗🍔

If you want a truly healthy burger, try making one at home with whole plant ingredients:

✅ Black beans, lentils, or chickpeas
✅ Quinoa or oats for texture
✅ Flax or chia seeds to bind
✅ Spices, garlic, and onions for flavor (No need for salt!)

These homemade burgers provide protein, fiber, and micronutrients without the processed junk. Plus, you can make them in bulk and freeze them for convenience. 💡

Final Thoughts: A Cheat Meal, Not a Staple 🎯

If you’re plant-based and struggling with cravings, Beyond Meat and Impossible Burgers are a step in the right direction. But don’t mistake them for health foods. They’re an occasional indulgence, not a core part of a whole-food, plant-based diet.

So next time you’re at a barbecue and want to feel included, go ahead and throw one on the grill—just don’t let it replace the nutrient-packed foods that truly heal your body. Eat to live, not just to fit in. 🌱💪
